Grey Handleless Kitchen in Mickleton
A dark handleless kitchen balanced with oak, open shelving and an island made for everyday use.
Key features
A grey handleless kitchen with warmth built in.
This grey handleless kitchen in Mickleton was designed for clients who had a rough idea of what they wanted, but needed help turning it into a finished plan. The brief called for a dark, modern kitchen that still felt warm, practical and easy to live in.
Designed by Thomas, the kitchen uses dark grey handleless cabinetry, quartz worksurfaces and a large island with an oak breakfast bar extension. The structure is clearly modern, but the oak details and open shelving take the edge off the darker palette.

Our approach
-
A modern kitchen that still felt liveable.
The clients came to RFK with a rough plan for the kitchen, but the space needed careful planning to make it work well day to day. The room had to support cooking, seating, storage and entertaining without feeling too harsh or dark.
A handleless kitchen gave the clients the clean modern look they wanted. The challenge was making that look fit comfortably with the home. This meant thinking carefully about warmth, texture and where storage would sit.
-
Softening a dark modern scheme.
Dark handleless kitchens can feel sharp if every surface is treated the same way. Here, the island gives the room its centre, but the oak breakfast bar extension changes how it feels. It brings warmth into the room and provides a place to sit alongside the working space.
The main appliances are grouped in one tall run, which keeps the working zones clear. The 2 x single ovens, combi microwave and integrated appliances give the kitchen a large cooking capacity while keeping the rest of the layout open.
Open shelving also plays an important role. It breaks up the cabinetry and gives the eye somewhere to rest, rounding out the feel of the dark cabinetry. The wine cooler and pendant lighting add a more sociable layer, so the room feels ready for entertaining as well as everyday use.
-
Dark cabinetry, quartz and oak.
The dark grey handleless cabinetry gives the kitchen a clean, modern base. Quartz worksurfaces keep the working areas practical and simple, while the oak breakfast bar creates an inviting social zone.
The industrial-style black pendant lights work with the darker palette and make the island feel less formal. Oak-effect flooring carries the warm feel through the open-plan space, so the kitchen and living area read as one room.
-
The large island
The island gives the kitchen a clear centre. It includes the hob and creates a useful working zone, while still leaving space for seating at the oak breakfast bar.
Oak breakfast bar extension
The oak extension softens the dark grey cabinetry and quartz. It makes the kitchen feel warm and gives the island a relaxed, sociable side.
Triple appliance tower
The 2 x single ovens, combi microwave and integrated appliances are grouped in one tall run. That gives the kitchen strong cooking capacity in a clean organized layout.
Open shelving
The open shelving breaks up the cabinetry and adds a personal detail. In a darker kitchen, that breathing space makes a real difference to how the room feels.
Wine cooler and pendant lighting
The wine cooler and industrial-style pendants give the room a more sociable feel. The kitchen works as well for an evening as it does for a weekday morning.
The result
A modern kitchen with a warmer edge.
The finished kitchen gives the clients the clean handleless look they wanted, with the warmth the room needed. The dark cabinetry feels bold, and the oak breakfast bar, open shelving and warm flooring keep the room welcoming for everyday use. It’s a kitchen that works well for cooking and sits comfortably in a family home.
“I am so pleased with my new kitchen from RFK. I had a rough plan of what I wanted but with the help of Thomas I have now got a fabulous kitchen. From the beginning to the end the service from Thomas and RFK was brilliant, even with the hurdles put in the way by COVID and lockdowns. The fitters were reliable, on time and the work done was to a really high standard. I would definitely recommend RFK to anyone looking for a new kitchen.”
