This dark grey handleless kitchen was designed for a generous open-plan space with strong period details. The room had the scale to hold a confident contemporary kitchen, but the design still needed warmth, balance and a clear connection to the rest of the home.
Designed by Thomas, the kitchen uses Nobilia Line N Artis Titanium cabinetry, Fugenstone Florence worksurfaces, NEFF appliances, a Quooker tap and a Caple sink. A large island with an oak dining extension, integrated wine storage and an open bookshelf display unit give the kitchen the necessary warmth and a lived-in quality.

A modern kitchen for a characterful room.
The clients wanted a contemporary kitchen with a confident feel, but the room itself had a strong identity. Period cornicing, ceiling roses and plaster moulding give the space a very different starting point from a typical modern extension.
The brief was to make the kitchen feel current while sitting comfortably alongside the architecture. It needed to work well for cooking and everyday use, and to feel at home in the room rather than installed into it.

Balancing modern cabinetry with period detail.
The main design challenge was contrast. This space had the scale and architectural confidence to carry dark handleless cabinetry, but that confidence still needed to be earned through the material choices around it.
The large island gives the kitchen its centre, with an oak dining extension that softens the dark cabinetry and makes the room feel more sociable. The herringbone oak flooring also plays an important role. It brings a warmer, more traditional rhythm into the room, bridging the modern kitchen and the period features.
The open bookshelf display unit breaks up the fitted cabinetry and gives the kitchen a more lived-in feel. In a room of this size, that matters. It keeps the wall run from reading as a single unbroken installation and gives it more personality.

Dark cabinetry, light warmth and practical detail.
The cabinetry is Nobilia Line N Artis Titanium, giving the kitchen a sleek, dark handleless finish. The colour works because of the size of the space, and the warmer materials that have been used around it.
Fugenstone Florence was chosen for the worksurfaces, giving the kitchen a durable surface with enough texture to sit well against the darker cabinetry. NEFF appliances, a Quooker tap and Caple sink complete the specification.
The oak dining extension, open shelving and wine storage give the kitchen a domestic quality that a fitted run of cabinetry alone wouldn’t.

The large island
The island gives the kitchen structure in a large open-plan room. It creates a clear working zone while keeping the kitchen connected to the surrounding living and dining spaces.
Oak dining extension
The oak dining extension brings warmth into the centre of the room. It also makes the island feel more social, giving it a clear role beyond the working space.
Triple appliance tower
The appliance tower keeps the ovens, combi microwave and warming drawer together in one practical zone. It gives the kitchen lots of cooking capacity while keeping the rest of the layout clean.
Bookshelf display unit
The bookshelf display turns a run of cabinetry into something more personal. It gives the kitchen a softer edge and helps it connect with the rest of the living space.
Herringbone oak flooring
The flooring helps link the contemporary kitchen to the period room. It brings warmth, pattern and a more domestic feel beneath the darker cabinetry.
The result
A contemporary kitchen that suits the room.
The finished kitchen balances a dark, modern specification with the scale and character of the room. The handleless cabinetry gives it a confident contemporary feel, while the oak, open shelving, wine storage and herringbone flooring keep it warm and liveable.
The period details and the contemporary cabinetry sit together easily. The design was built around the room, and it shows.
